PREP Hosts Successful Minneapolis Workshop

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law’s Parental Readiness and Empowerment Program held its first event in partnership with Minneapolis Public Schools and the Office for Family, Student and Community Engagement on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Minneapolis Public Schools Davis Center.  The workshop was offered in four different languages—English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali—to meet the needs of the almost 70 workshop participants.

Parents were actively engaged, asking questions throughout the workshop.  Parents increased their knowledge in how to be effective advocates for their children and learned about their rights in their child’s education.  Following the informative presentations, parents met with volunteer advocates from Dorsey & Whitney LLP and Lindquist & Vennum LLP during the Educational Consultation Clinic.  Volunteers answered workshop participants’ questions about their child’s educational needs.

PREP looks forward to its next Minneapolis workshop, taking place on Saturday, April 12th, 2014, at the Richard Green Central School.  This workshop will address education as a civil right, the educational rights of undocumented citizens, the Minnesota DREAM Act and DACA (Deferred Action for childhood Arrivals), and preparing children for Kindergarten.  Additionally, parents will be able to meet with volunteer advocates during the Educational Consultation Clinic to discuss the specific needs of students and create action plans for parents.  To RSVP please call 612-688-2095 or click HERE.
